I would like an explaination please.

Energy in the form of heat is required for water to change from a solid to a liquid. This energy is called "the latent heat of fusion." The salt, as it mixes with the ice, lowers the melting point of the water causing it to absorb heat energy from wherever it can get it, in this case the soon to be ice cream, causing it to freeze.

Cold by the way is the absence of heat or heat energy.

Forcing ice to melt with salt lowers its temperature and causes the ice cream to freeze

I believe that the salt lowers the freezing point and makes the icecream smoother... Dont hold me to that though
