A thesis statement is generally one sentence, sometimes two, that tells the reader exactly why you're writing this paper and what point you're trying to make.

Thesis Statement.

Writing in college often takes the form of persuasion, i.e. convincing others that you have an interesting, logical point of view on the subject you are studying. Course assignments often ask you to make a persuasive case in writing. You are asked to convince your reader of your point of view. This form of persuasion, often called academic argument, follows a predictable pattern in writing. After a brief introduction of your topic, you state your point of view on the topic directly and often in one sentence. This sentence is the thesis statement and it serves as a summary of the argument you'll make in the rest of your paper.

I googled "thesis statement" and came up with this. (google helps a whole lot when trying to find out what something is.)

It is the opening of a paper. Its job is to tell the reader what to expect from the rest of the article or writing.

Usually it states a position: "The containing of wild animals in zoos is barbaric and should be criminalised".

Or: "Wild animals who are contained in zoos are fortunate to be protected and given a chance to reproduce without fear of predation."

Each statement is able to be expanded and the reader will be 'prepped' for the rest of the article by the opening thesis.

a thesis statement is usually found in the opening paragraph of an essay and includes the topic of essay along with the subtopics that are going to be described in each paragraph of the essay.
ex) Dogs are great pets because they are friendly, loving, and provide companionship.

The essay is telling why dogs are great pets and the three reasons that are going to be described (each having their own paragraph) are lovingness, friendliness, and companionship.
