I always hear about how a Mac is so much better for Graphic Artists & Designers than a PC - may I ask why? Why is it better?
And why do Macs cost so much? Do you get what you pay for?
I'm curious because this what I'm declaring as my major in school.

There are two main reasons for this. One, graphic designers generally prefer a more aesthetically pleasing environment, so they tend to prefer Mac because they look better than the typical gray boxes that PCs are made in.

Two, not only does most of the design industry work with Macs so does most of the print industry, so you would be putting yourself at a disadvantage by using a PC because there will be a lot of printers out there that don't take PC formats for the likes of InDesign or Illustrator files.

Macs tend to cost that much because Apple is a private company, and they make everything themselves. Unlike the PC industry where thousands of companies are making the parts Apple essentially makes 80% of the parts associated with their computers, so the mark-up would be much higher.

With that said, in my experience Macs are very dependable computers, and are worth the higher price tags on them. I have an Apple Powerbook that I've had for over 5 years that I've never had a problem with. During that time I've had two PC laptops die on me. You do the math.
