If for some reason the file wasn't saved as a .doc (or, for Word 2007, .docx) file, Word won't be used to open it. Try to find the file and examine its extension. If the file doesn't seem to have an extension, do this to see it:

1. In Windows Explorer or My Computer, click on the Tools->Folder Options menu item.
2. Click on the View tab.
3. Down in the Advanced Settings list box, UNSelect the Hide Extensions for known file types checkbox.
4. Click OK.

Also, try to double-click another file with the same extension and see if that works. It's remotely possible that Windows lost the association between Word and the file type.

Good luck.

try restarting your computer and open it up again if that doesn't work . . open word . . click on file and open it from the list of documents displayed on the bottom of the file menu . . . or try to open it by opening word then hold dowwn the ctrl key and press O the locate the file on the desktop and open it that way

Both of the other answers should work, but did you try double clicking on it.
