This is going to be very hard to pick a best answer, so many of you have made such excellent cases !
I don't want to turn it over to voting, so
I think I will have to go with the number of thumbs up given to an answer.

A part of me is for keeping the little kids away from some adults...

The other part of me says if they aren't old enough to be responsible for themselves their parents shouldn't let them on the Internet.

Against it
- it is not possible to police anyway. Kids would want to come on to the adult sites and none would be the wiser
- if kids want to ask a question of serious concern and want adult advice, how can they do so? There are sections that many kids are getting good information and help (Men's health, Women's health, Homework help, Science sections - to name just a few.) IF there are different age categories for users, us adults won't go there - so how can they get the answer when they ask a question?
- basically it's discrimination
- kids mature differently. Some may feel they don't want to be (or NOT fit in) the age category they are supposed to be in. Not fair on these kids.
- segregation would likely to breed animosity and create more trolls

and my MOST IMPORTANT POINT - Having younger age categories will immediately attract predators to that section!!!!!!

We shouldn't take Y!A too seriously. It is mostly fun.

Cheers

Against - relying on the honor system would make things worse by dividing it up. Kids would be inflating their ages to be in the adult section and there there could easily be perverts posing as children in the "safer" kids' zone.

At least the way it is now it's fairly straightforward - there's rules against adult content (albeit leniently enforced) because there's kids on the site, and parents should be fully aware that their kids are communicating with adults if they're using this site. Making futile attempts to compartmentalize it only makes things more difficult for everyone.

Great question! My first impulse was "of course I would be for age categories"... but actually, I think it does everyone good to be able to hear opinions from all generations. Keep an open mind.

It would be cool if Yahoo Answers had a filter (sort of like E-mail does) to filter out select words that I don't want to read about.

I would be for it. Sometimes people of certain age groups need advice from their own age groups. It's kind of annoying when you are talking about something that you want help from older, more experienced people, and all of a sudden there is a 12 year old commenting something irrelevant to the question asked.

And I don't like seeing "grown" people butt in on the teens questions... like one I saw about a girl wanting to know if a boy might like her, and you got all these people telling her that she shouldn't worry about it and she is too young... well, thats what the teens do. They worry about boys, or girls, or appearances. Its normal.

I would definately NOT be against having age categories. Everyone would benefit from that.

I would be aaaaaaaall for that!!!
I always thought it should be that way.
Adults will be adults, and sometimes
adults say things that kids don't need
to read. Some avatars are very adult.

On the flip side, I have answered questions
from younger folks that needed an adult
opinion, and I was glad to answer the quest.

I would be against it because some ages never ask questions in certain categories and I think you should be able to answer in your own category. Plus, separating the younger ones from the other ones because of content and reducing their risk of being preyed on is useless because both parties can lie about their age...

1. Leave the parenting to your parents. 2. Move out if you don't like it at home any more. It is hard to live with your parents when you are an adult. That's why so many grow up and find jobs. But if you choose to stay, recognize that THEY are the rulemakers, not you. You are in no position to discipline your little brother.

I would be for it, because if there were age categories we would know at least how old are the people we are talking to and it would be easier for us to communicate and have better answers as everyone can write silly things because of the limit of their age. But on the other hand i would be against it because older people who are wiser wouldn't be able to advise us youngsters if there were age categories.

I would be against it. I like the fact that people of all ages can answer the questions and have really learned a lot about what young people think. My only complaint is that I wish more people took answering the questions more seriously.
