The word is "shiny."
And no, dropping them in boiling water WILL NOT get them clean.
You need to use a commercially-available jewelry cleaning product, like Tarn-X.

For the gold, you can take every comercial household cleaner. For it is noble metall and it is resistant against the most chemicals. Other is it with silver. It is also a noble metall, but likes to get into a chemical conjunction with sulfor. When this happens it becomes black. Wash it first with household cleaner. That will take of the ordinary dirt. Then put in warm water with vinegar like justanotherguy suggests. That wil take off the black coating.

No boiling water by itself does not clean anything; You have to use cleaning products made for whatever job you are doing. Try putting aluminum foil in a pan, put your silver in and pour hot water over it. Wherever the foil touches the silver will shine it .(not too sure about gold though)
This works on silverware too.

Dont know ? Never heard of cleaning silver/gold that way! I use a ammonia/water solution for gold. For silver I Have a polishing cloth to remove darkness on silver. Both of those methods work for me.

1 cup of water 2 TB spoons of ammonia with a few drop of dish washing liquid makes for a great gold cleaner that you can leave in for an hour. It will work on silver but you can only leave in for a minute or two or it will turn black.

Go to the local mall or jewlery store and have a free cleaning done of your jewelery if it's only a couple pieces it shouldn't be a problem.. They use an ultrasonic cleaner and it works really fast and really nice...

I dont thinks so, if your trying to kill a bacteria then you surely youll clean it but if not making it shiny. It will only rust your silver and gold, Try using toothpaste in cleaning your jewelry.

I am not sure about the gold one, but to make the sterling silver one nice and shiny, scrub it with white toothpaste.

Put some vinegar in the water but don't boil it. Warm is fine.

It would probably get oils from your skin off, but it will not take the tarnish off that makes them dull. you need a Silver polish to get them shiny.
