why do people spit so much?

Basketball players don't spit cause it would make the floor slippery. Football players don't spit cause it would get all nasty in their facemask of their helmets.
Although, I have seen hockey players spit quite a bit, but not as much as in baseball.

I think the main reason baseball players spit is because its subliminal. Baseball is a mimicked sport. What I mean is that as we grow up and watch the players on TV and in person, we emulate them and their nervous habits. Examples being: Punching the inside of your glove, adjusting your cap, hitting your shoes with your bat, pitchers that blow in their hand even when it is 90 degrees out, and even spitting.
For those of us that are good enough to make it, those habits that we see sort of ingrain into our subconscious.

You're outside, so you don't have to clean up.

You slide and can get dirt in your mouth all the time. I don't see much dirt on a basketball court.

i dont chew tobacco i dip copenhagen, most people playin sports do it casue of tobacco or sunflower seeds, i did it a lot cause my saliva was thick from drinking gatorade and i couldnt stand it
