Just name who do you think has the highest vertical leaps in basketball. Ill name one.:

. . . . [Bill] Russell went, took on Charles Dumas, the top jumper in the world, and pushed him to 6’9 ¼”. It was the best high jump in the United States up to that point in the season. After both had cleared that height, Dumas wanted to call it a tie, but Russell said, “Whatthe heck. Let’s reach for the sky,” and asked the officials to set the bar at seven feet. I read the newspaper report the next day. Dumas missed badly on all three tries.“Russell,” the story said, “just nicked the bar with his knee on the way down on his firsttwo tries, and he was over on his third try, but ticked the bar with his ankle after his body had passed over.” The bar shuddered, almost stayed up, and then fell into the pit."

The guy cleared a 7 foot high jump but his ankle ticked the bar.

It's a nice story but apparently, this was a high-jump contest. Vertical leaping in basketball is a totally different thing in that you literally jump straight up vertically off the ground on both feet. In high jump, athletes take off on one foot after sprinting for several meters. Vertical leap, on the other hand, is measured while the person jumps off the spot he's acutally standing on, that is, without sprinting.

To answer your question, I think David "Skywalker" Thompson had a 44-inch vertical leap. He was MJ's idol growing up.

David Thompson was known as "Skywalker", because he has a 48 inch vertical leap. The alley oop pass was basically invented because of his leaping ability. Hed led NC State to the 1974 Championship. He later played for the Nuggets in both the ABA and the NBA. He also played for the Supersonics. I'm assuming that 48 inches is tops all-time...BTW he was Micheal Jordan's basketball role model....Hall of Famer. As the chairman said; Micheal Wilson has dunked on a 12 ft basket, which I just read in FHM magazine. Wilson is a part of the Harlem Globetrotters. Not quite sure of his size, but he's a big boy, so I'm not sure about his vertical leap, and he's never played in the NBA from what I understand.

You gotta go with Spudd Webb. A 5-7 guard who could jump and dunk with the best of any 6+ foot NBA player.

Here's one from the old days that you may not know. In NYC (at Rucker's, I think), there was a legend. Name was Herman and everyone called him Herman the Helicopter. He had a bet. You put a five dollar bill on top of the backboard and if he could jump up and grab it, it was his. Herm got a lot of meal money this way.
