I'm an old woman conserning tightening lug nuts. If you run the tapers of the lug nut up just snug at the wheel while it's in the air let the jack down and alternately snug them up tighter.
I absolutely can't stand factory supplied lug wrenches that take up trunk space. The ergonimic crazy bend does not "get it" with me. Go to Sears and buy a 16" 1/2" breaker bar and a 19mm deep well socket. You have perfect right angles to work with. You'll find your hands get a better "feel" of whats tight or only snug.

Why not just put both sides on the ground? It won't hurt it either way. I always put the lug nuts on finger tight, lower the car so the tires are on the ground then tighten the lugs with a wrench. It's the easiet way. Otherwise you need someone to hold the brake pedal for you.

When you put the tire on, just snug up the lug nuts. Then lower the car and tighten them up. Pick one and tighten it, skip one and tighten another, skip one, and tighten the next, skip, tighten, skip, tighten. That is an easy way to remember the star pattern of tightening lug nuts. This applies to 5 lug rims however.

good luck.

Leave the whole car on the ground if you are tightening or loosening. If you are loosening, don't remove the lug nuts just get them loose then raise the car and finish.
