a friend of mine who repairs cars and sells them says if a car was manufactured in 1973, (uk) it does`nt require road tax. also, i saw an advert for a car for sale recently saying it`s exempt from road tax because it was made in 1973. i think it was an m.g. i`m rather baffled by this. dont all vehicles have to be taxed? also, does this apply to any other countries. (e.g. america)

No because it is considered a collection piece, more than a car. The law considers that cars more than 30 years old are not going to be used much for driving.

Cars first registered before 1973 still have to display a tax disc. However there is no charge for the disc.

The last Conservative government introduced the scheme as all cars over 25 years old were "tax exempt" to help preserve our motoring history (while doing little to support our then-present motor industry), however in 1998 the Labour government froze the date, so it now only applies to cars first registered before 1973.

All cars , motorbikes registered before 1 jan 1973 are exempt from duty payment .This would have carried on that all cars would be exempt at 25 years of age . but after labour came into power they decided not to carry it on! ( cut off date is 1997)

25-year old cars are exempt from VED, so they get a free tax disc.

I'm not aware of any other countries that have VED (not that I've ever looked).
