it's basically another company's version of HD DVDs. You do need a special player. That's about it. Just better picture quality.

blu-ray is the next generation format of watching movies. it is currently in a format war with HD DVD and it is currently winning. the war isn't about how good eahc disc is, it's about how mcuh companies support eahc one and how mcuh movies are in each one. blockbuster is carrying only blu-ray movies, so that basically means that blu-ray will win.

reasons why blu-ray will win:
-blockbuster carries blu-ray, not HD DVD
-the ps3 comes with a built-in blu-ray player
-most people rent their movies from blockbuster
-it has more storage in each disk than HD DVD

reasons why HD DVD will win:
-it has a cheaper player with the same sound and picture that blu-ray has.

reasons why blu-ray will lose:
-the players (besides a ps3) are very expensive
-paramount and universal aren't exclusive to blu-ray

reasons why HD DVD will lose:
-it is currently way behind blu-ray
-no rental stores support it
-it has less storage than blu-ray discs
-most companies have already chosen blu-ray over HD DVD

bottom line is, blu-ray and HD DVD are almost exactly the same, but blu-ray discs have more storage capacity (about 9 hours of HD movies!). I would get the blu-ray player because more consumers are buying it and HD DVD is a dying format.

blu-ray is different than dvd because it uses a blue laser to view the movies.
To simply put, blu-ray movies have way more storage than dvd and they look and sound better and have better features.
to watch them, you need a 1080p HDTV, a HDMI cable (which can be as low as $5 and as high as $100) and a bluray player.

Blu-ray is Sony's format for high-definition DVDs. They can be used in either a new Blu-ray compatible HD-DVD player or the PS3. Blue-ray is one of two formats available for high-definition DVDs. The other is simply called HD-DVD and it was developed by Toshiba.
