I have a 99 2-door Cavalier. My drivers side door will not unlock. It is not automatic locks, but a manual one. It seems like the knob is jammed and won't move. If I pull on it far enough from the inside, I can open my door while holding it. Otherwise, when I try to get in with my key from the outside, it won't open. So I have to crawl from my passenger side. lol How easliy can this be looked at/fixed? Would it cost a lot or could I have someone like my brother just take the door apart? Thanks!

Another group of horrible answers. And Dodgeman was the worst, if the linkage came off, it wouldn't work at all, and since it does work if you pull hard enough, it's NOT off.

What you have is bent linkage, that happens over time. You will have to take off the panels so you can see the linkage, and bend it back to where it's supposed to be. You can lubricate the door hinges too, but that will have no effect on the problem you are having. Start with the vertical links that goes from the button, and straighten it first. Be gentle, you don't want to break it, and be careful with the clips that are holding things together. Just keep pulling and bending until it works as it should.

Sounds like it just needs to have the door panel taken off and the locking linkage lubricated. When it gets dry and binds and is difficult to unlock by pulling the button inside then it will be impossible to get enough leverage with the key. Some lube should clear it.

It cant hurt to take the door trim off and have a look inside.
Sometimes the lock rod comes out of the nylon connector and jams under it. A simple fix if your the least bit mechanically inclined.

it is a dirty or rusty latch, you will need to dismantle the door then spray the latch with penetrating oil work the locks and the door handles quite vigorously until it starts to move freely.
It isn't a huge job and if your brother doesn't want to leap into taking the door apart you can try to get the penetrating oil into the door through the latch area and it may loosen it up enough to work.

its probably just the rod came off of it ,and that can easily be repaired, get it open again, and remove the door panel, then remove the plastic cover, and look and see if the rod for the handle has came off,it has you can put it back on again, they will do this from slamming the door sometimes, you can give it a try,if the clip is till good that holds the rod on ,you can re-use it other wise a parts store should have a new clip for it,good luck on it.

If you don't have power locks then have someone that is mechanically inclined take a look at it. It will take some time to fix but should be easy enough
