Well first of all, if you have a black thumb you just need to try harder. But in your defense, some plants are just tricky bastar*s sometimes. Maybe you had a bit of bad luck choosing plants that are not so needy. Maybe you bought the ones with the brightly colored leaves that need more sun than most people have indoors. Or those #*&^%! plants that drop dead the second they become a little dry. Oh, they're out there. Here's what you do-
Invest about $40 and buy about 20 little $2 plants. Yes, the tiny ones in the little 2inch pots. Keep them moist and just move them around to different light situations if they start to look ill. Try to look them up on line and see just what they need. In a year the ones that survived are the types of plants that can tolerate the type of light you have as well as your mode of plant care. Then just go out and buy bigger ones of those.

Ferns just keep giving them water. I have 2, 3' planters in my kitchen on the window sill (no curtains the ferns are a good barrier) this window gets indirect light. the ferns just keep growing I water them with the hose from the sink. They let me know when they need water they start to droop a little. they are going on 4 years old, with fertilizer used about 2 time a year.
If you go to a good greenhouse they will help you get what you want for your personal space.
Have fun and Good luck

Spider plants are easy to grow. By the way, the name has nothing to do with the plant and spiders.

My aunt dumped her philodendrons on me when she went to Florida last winter, and they've gone nuts without much care at all. When she brought them, the vines were right at table height. All I do is water them twice a week, and even after cutting them down twice, they're draping the floor! If you want more of them, all you have to do is cut off the ends and put them in water. After a month or two, roots will sprout, and you just stick them in the dirt.

peace lily, dracena, umbrella plants are all very easy to care for & will take low lighting. for hanging plants, try pothos, grape ivy or spider plants. i simply put mine in a pail of water overnight, once a week & they are extremly happy. fertilize with a balanced houseplant fertilizer according to label directions.
