I think it's a great game. Currently there are 4 GW games in the stores.

Prophecies (or just plain Guild Wars) -The first game and also the longest campaign. It's a good place to start.

Factions - The shortest campaign. Some good PvP options here. 2 new player professions available, the Assassin and Ritualist. (Asian themed)

Nightfall. - Good storyline. Added bonus of Heroes available to your player. Those are customizable NPC characters that tag along with your character. Good if you dislike grouping with other real people. They are better than the non-customizable henchmen in the other games. 2 new professions, the Dervish and Paragon. (African themed)

You can buy any of those that you wish and start playing. Each takes place on it's on continent, but if you own more than one your characters can travel freely among all the lands.

There is also a new expansion game out called Eye of the North. You must own one of the above games first and then just add on this one.

Is Guild Wars a good game? Now, there's a question! Guild Wars has had a good streak so far, however their newest game has been a little below standards. Now which guild wars are you talking about?
