I don't know when, but it closed for two main reasons. First it had a brutal reputation and the public did not have the same disregard for the treatment of prisoners any more. Also, the prison's biggest asset was that it was supposedly escape proof. But someone did manage to escape. After that it was hard to justify the expense involved in running the island prison.

Alcatraz History is likely the best available site (http://www.alcatrazhistory.com/mainpg.htm) for Alcatraz. Among many other things it has a list of prisoners. It was operational from the mid 1930s until 1963. Its closing was due primarily to the rising costs and deteriorating facilities. Operationally, Alcatraz was the most expensive prison of any state or federal institution. It was determined that other institutions could serve the same purpose for less cost.

The corrosive effects of the saltwater, combined with the exorbitant cost of running the prison ($10.10 per prisoner per day, as compared with $3.00 at USP Atlanta, not including the estimated 5 million that would be required for restoration), provided U.S. Attorney General Robert Kennedy with grounds for closing the prison.
On March 21, 1963, USP Alcatraz closed after twenty-nine years of operation.
