1] hang up: dresses, jackets, blouses, skirts, pants, jeans. If you have room, hang up bathrobes.
I hang up all categories by color [ ROYGBIV ], so I know where to look for something.
Shoe racks on floor hold shoes in order of season - all closed, open toe or heel, sandals/espadrilles/huraches, then athletic shoes. Everyday shoes go in front, dressy shoes go in back. You can ROYGBIV them if you want.
2] dresser one [ tall skinny dresser? ], drawer one: bras, panties [ I keep dressy undergarments all together - strapless bra, backless, fancy panties and hose in a lingerie bag, so I don't have to hunt for them ]
3] drawer two - socks, tights, hose
4] three - pajamas, nighties
5] four - sweat tops
6] five - sweat pants
7] six - basketball/soccer uniforms
8] dresser two [ wide, shorter dresser? ], drawer one - tanks, camisoles, halters
9] drawer two - short sleeve Ts
10] three - shorts, bermudas, capris
11] four - long sleeve Ts
12] five - sweaters
This is just an example - it depends on how much of each you have. When you see them all, you may get rid of some [ donate them! ] or get new combination ideas.

I have a somewhat-large closet as well as a chest of drawers (that I only use two drawers for clothes). I have two drawers (it is a small chest of drawers) for my undies. Then in my closet, I have a special bag for my dresses and coats. I have a special multi-hanger on the back of my door for all my skirts and I hang up my nicer hoodies.
As for how I would organize your closet:
Get a special dress bag-many stores will have them-and put your dresses in there to help protect them.
Closet should go like this:
Tanks, short-sleeved shirts, dressy shirts, long-sleeved shirts, sweaters, sweatshirts, and then your dress bag. Have one chest of drawers as bras, undies, socks, sweats, and pajamas (the stuff that is either worn under stuff or not worn out of the house). Have the other one be devoted to your athletic clothes partially as well as your pants. Have one drawer for your jeans, one for your nice shorts, etc.

Your better clothes should be hung up. Like Dresses, sweaters, dress pants, nice tops, etc.
Then things like jeans, PJ's, shorts, underwear can go in the dressers.
I organize my closet by frist in long-sleeve, short-sleeve, skirts, dress pants, dresses, then jackets. Then break it down further and sort by color.
Trust me, it makes it so much easier to find something to wear!

I say in your drawers store things like socks, bras, panties, pjs, soccer shorts and things like those...
In your closet, i suggest store the rest but in order by item and then by color. How many times have you looked for that red shirt!!! With a color coordinated closet, it will be much easier to locate that one shirt you have to wear to match your shoes.
Hope this helps:)

Hmmm, yes, it's working. My cat was telling me that cats everywhere were going to start to do this...they're now at the global "re-arranging" level and are coordinating the closets first, furniture next, where the cars are parked, the landscaping, the local and national infrastructure and so on and so forth. You'll get used to the new "system".
