(2x + 1) (x - 5) = 0
x = - 1/2 , x = 5

2007-09-03 11:29:25 · answer #1 · answered by Como 7 · 0 0

2x^2 -- 9x -- 5 = 0
=> 2x^2 -- 10x + x -- 5 = 0
=> 2x(x -- 5) + 1(x -- 5) = 0
=> (x -- 5)(2x + 1) =0
=> x -- 5 = 0 gives x = 5
and 2x + 1 = 0 gives x = --1/2

That's simple:

2x^2 - 9x - 5 = 0
2x^2 - 10x + x - 5 = 0

2x(x - 5) + (x - 5) = 0

(x - 5) (2x + 1) = 0

2x^2-9x-5=0
factors to
(2x+1)(x-5)
so x= -1/2 or 5

5*2=10

-10+1 =9

so , you need to write coeffiient 9 as -10+1 (i.e as factors )

2x^2-9x-5=0
(2x+1)(x-5)=0
2x+1=0--->2x=-1-->x=-1/2
x-5=0--->x=5
