(-5) is a number on the number line.
It is 5 places to the LEFT of zero.
+ (- 4) means that you have to go another 4 places to the LEFT.
This takes you 9 places to the LEFT of zero.
ie to (-9)
Thus:-
(- 5) + (- 4) = (- 9)

Unfortunately we use the same two signs, "+" and "-" to denote BOTH the action to be taken, AND the placement of the number on the number line.
Think of it this way: negative 5 added to negative 4 (or the other way around), then it seems to be easier. -5 plus a -4 = -9.
It does get complicated with -5 -(-4) but you can think of it the same way: negative 4 taken away from negative 5, all you will have left is negative one.
This is because the operator, the "-" has to be multiplied through so: - x - = + and the form becomes -5 +4 which is still -1.

It's just like adding 5+4, except you put a negative sign on it. So the answer would be -9.

-5+(-4)= -9. It's really simple actually.
Think of it this way,
'kay say you owe $5 bucks, for buying a candy bar. (I know their not that much but anyways) that's why it's negative, you don't have it.
Then you owe $4 bucks, for 'finding' a bus ticket and you had to repay them. Now that you owe both you add them and now you have to pay $9 dollars. -$9. Think of money.
Easier, a negative (-) plus another negative (-) will equal a negative (-).
Hope that doesn't confuse you. But if it does you'll be in a different world when algebra comes in.

-5+(-4)=-9 because all u have to do is act like the parentheses around the -4 is not there and solve the problem like -5+-4 then do the process and solve

the answer is -9.
all you have to do in operations like this is you 'multiply' the signs of the numbers, e.g. "+" x "-". in your question, you multiply the "+" sign/operator with the "-" sign of 4. it will simply result to -5 - 4 = -9. remember this:
"+" x "+" = "+"
"+" x "-" = "-"
"-" x "-" = "+"
once you get your operations correct, you're all set.
