Anyone I've known who said they were going to take a year off before they go to college never actually ever do.... and then end up regretting it later. Consider the summer between HS graduation and the fall your "time off". Don't do anything rash in that time like buy a car or get married, then start college fresh, no kids, no debt, no mortgage, no bills, no spouse, just yourself and your educational goal.
Not impossible to graduate with those above things, but a heck of a lot easier.

You can apply now, ten years from now or forty years from now. You don't have to go directly from high school to university and in many cases, it's a good idea to take a year off, travel, work, stash a few bucks away and just have a bit of a break before you return to school, because university or college requires a certain degree of maturity to succeed.

It is ok to take a year or two off, particularly if you need the time to earn some moeny for college. On the other hand, going to college right after high school has the advantage that you do not miss a step and can continue on with academics fresh on your mind that you loose by taking time off.

It's totally fine to take a year off after high school, many people do. Just remember the deadlines for next year. Also keep in mind that the schools might ask you if you took such a break and will ask you why. Be prepared to give an adequate answer to that question.

It is absolutely fine to take a year off, as long as you have a plan for that year. Plan to work, travel, do something to continue to mature and grow, and then apply for university or college. You can apply to colleges and universities at any time.

It's been my experience that when people take off time, the less likely they are to go back. So in general I don't recommend it. But it is your life and you can do what you want. If you do take off time and you have potential scholarships, be sure that you can still get them when you eventually do go back.

it's fine, you can apply in a year...BUT the college will wonder what you've been doing for the past year. if you haven't been doing much of anything, it will lessen your chances of getting in to your top school.
