You don't. And you don't let a regular mechanic do it. The loading and adjustments in the differential are extremely critical and should only be handled by an expert.

Since you are just asking on how to overhaul it and not asking us what is wrong with it then I will stick to that. Unless you are mechnically incline, the rear end is a pain to overhaul. If you can get the shop manual for it, that will help you alot. It has all the specs for all the bolts and preload. Have fun doing it.

What year engine size ford 9" rear ends are front loaded and buy a complete gear already set up. Then with the axles pulled out replace the wheel bearings and axle seals. Not the job for mister or misses back yard mechanic. Torches grinders and jack stands and Hydraulic press work required.

go to the dealer, bring in the rear axle id tag#, you will need shims, bearings, seals, pinion crush sleave, and whatever actually broke... and torque wrench that can measure very high ft lbs, and low inch lbs for the preload.
but dont worry, expeditions do not have 9" rears.
they are 8.8s the cover comes off and the axles slip out... easy.

Check to see if there are any recalls on your vehicle. My dad had to rebuild the rearend in his Ford truck after he took it to the dealership to be fixed three times. Come to find out the parts they were using were defective. My dad sued Ford and they eventually settled for about twice the cost of him rebuilding it himself.
