Fire is the rapid Oxidation (Combustion) of a fuel vapour burning in Oxygen. It is a highly 'Exothermic' reaction that also gives out Light (flames) and large quantities of Heat Energy. The products of this reaction are generally all gaseous as CO2, H2O vapour and, if insufficient oxygen is supplied, the formation of CO gas and solid Carbon (as sooty smoke) may also be present. Some will say that fire is also 'Plasma' a Fourth state and there's also a Fifth state, not associated with fire, the 'Bose-Einstein Condensate'. My learning was that, Matter exists in Three States...Solid, Liquid and Gas and, as far as I'm concerned, that's enough for me, as I'm not a Scientist nor a Professor and don't wish to be involved with such subjects as the 4th and 5th States of Matter. I'm quite happy with the knowledge I have. (The Old Four Elements once used many years ago are... Earth, Wind, Fire and Water).

I think the best answer might be Ice, Water, Steam.
They are all H2O, in it's different phases.

Now there are some unique properties to H2O, for instance, in it's solid form, ice. it is less dense than in it's liquid form.

This is not the case with other chemical compounds. It is more common for the solid to be more dense than the liquid.

Solids:
- ice (if below 0 degrees C)
- brick
- wood

Liquids:
- mercury
- water
- ammonia (if its below -78 degrees C)

Gases (at room temperature):
- hydrogen
- helium
- oxygen

Any substance (such as nitrogen or carbon or lithium or any other element or compound) can be solid, liquid, or gas depending on the temperature (and to some degree the pressure).

I'll give you just one. Water. Water can be a solid ice, liquid (ummmmm...water) and a gas. Most solids melt when heated and liquids will evaporate into gas. I think you should understand the concept now.

steam is a gas, water is a liquid, ice is a solid.

Almost all elements or compounds can exist in any of these three states depending on temperature and pressure.

Almost all elements can exist at any phase of matter if the conditions are right. Google "phase change diagram" and you'll see what I mean.
