Pick out someone, maybe a recent citizen, and describe his or her life. Then add, "Americans are all the same–and they are all different!"

Justin, there are a lot of ways you might want to approach a paper like that.

My suspicion is that your teacher is looking for a paper that examines the ways in which citizens of the US perceive themselves. That is, what values do they feel are uniquely theirs and distinct from those of citizens of other countries?

So Kayak Girls has a good point. You might start with the Bill of Rights and see how it's different from the guarantees offered by other constitutions. The US Constitution is a good way of defining the values that the Founding Fathers felt were or ought to be shared by their fellow citizens.

Less idealistically, you might look at the role the United States currently plays in geopolitics and the planetary environment. I suspect your teacher will not like the reality that would have to be expressed in a paper that does that honestly, though.

You could take the Saturday Evening Post approach and look at a selection of the myths and icons that fellow citizens hold dear. You know the type of thing..."America is rugged individualism tempered by generosity of spirit; 4th of July picnics, hotdogs at baseball games, and the strong silent nobility of Gary Cooper standing up for what's right..."

Or you could answer the question with real integrity and point out that in fact, an American is an inhabitant of one of two continents of the Western Hemisphere that includes Jamaica, Honduras, Venezuela, Cuba, Canada, Mexico and dozens of other countries. The name America has been appropriated by one of those countries and, by and large, the others let them have it because it makes sure that the rest of the world knows that we are NOT US citizens.

Just google it and copy some essays online. Mix the words a little bit to make it harder for the teacher to spot it. I asked my friend one time to write an essay for me and I got an A minus.

try saying all the rights we have. ask your family members like "what does being an american mean to you" and put it in there. then say "to me, being an american means _____ [ex. freedom of speech]" say "being an american makes our country different from being a russian [or something] because they ______ [example. dont get to make there own decisions - they have no democracy]" NOTE: i have no idea if they have a democracy or not but you get what i mean. sorry if this doesnt help and your welcome if it did
