I own a Hoover All Terrain F7452-900. I paid about $300.00 for it at HHGregg in June. It uses hot water and I was very surprised at the suction. It does not dry as fast as a professional cleaner but when you consider the cost of having a professional twice a year it is still worth it. I am very picky about what I buy to clean my house. I researched before I bought my carpet cleaner through consumer reports as well as asking my niece, who owns a cleaning business. Both came up with the same answer, so I bought one. I have not been disappointed with my purchase. It comes just as clean as a commercial company coming to my house, which I have used for the past 10 years. I was very skeptical and made sure I could return it if I didn't like the way it cleaned. Needless to say, I still have it!

I haven't had too much luck with the commercial carpet cleaners.. I think they just don't have enough suction to get the dirt out... It's handy for pet/kid stains but, not a replacement for getting the carpets shampood on a regular basis... I'd also rent one from the grocery store every few months to get the heavy traffic area's it cost around $16 + solutions for the rental.. So, you may have to way out the pro's and cons... I would say spend over $200 to get a nice one and also get your carpets cleaned at least once a year... I've had good luck with using my wet/dry shop vac on spills/stains... I just use a bit of laundry soap and water and I use a soft bristle brush and some elbow grease and I suck all the water/soap out and repeat with clean water... However, I've never tried using the shop vac on the whole house.. Just to spot clean.... A really nice wet/dry shop vac with attachments and blower for yardwork can run about $150.00

I spent $299 on an Eureka that uses hot water and cleaner. I like that it had powerful suction and does a great job of cleaning without sudsy buildup. It also has an attachment for stairs and upholstery. I clean my carpets 3 X a year and use the allergen type cleaner...VERY Effective!!! Best purchase I have made in a LONG time!!
I also do area rugs thru out my home!!

I used to own my own shampooer but I got rid of it, as it left a residue on the carpeting, which acted like a dirt magnet. I decided to let a pro clean my carpeting when needed.

I have one and it is only good for light cleaning not the deep down dirt, like animals track in. I don*t think there is one on the market that does do that. friends I know complain theirs don*t do a good job. ( I have a Hoover)
When mine gets really bad, I use Tide suds (really foam it up in a bucket) spread on the bad stuff and let dry then vac.
Sometimes I use ammonia too, But only use the foamy suds. Don*t wet the carpet.

I have a bissell cleaner, that cost about 100 bucks, and it does ok for light cleaning, but I found that the commercial cleaner (you can rent at Home Depot) did a better job, especially with hard core dirt spots.

The Kirby vacuum rug shampoo works.
I don't know about the others.
I would stop and talk to someone in
a place such as Ace Hardware.
They carry a good line of rug cleaners.
