Adelaide has recorded temperatures in a number of places. The Regional Office moved from West Terrace to Kent Town in 1980 and the West Terrace observation site was then closed. At West Terrace, the lowest temperature ever recorded between 1887 and 1979 was 0.6°C on 24 July 1908 while the highest temperature recorded was 46.1° on 12 January 1939. There is a record of 47.6°C in Adelaide on the same day but I am not sure where the reading was taken.

At Kent Town, the lowest temperature has been -0.4°C on 8 June 1982 but the maximum has only been 44.3°C so far.

The Waite Institute site (1925 - 1986) has temperatures no colder or warmer than the others but Adelaide Airport (1955 to present) recorded -2.6°C on 8 June 1982.

The hottest day in Adelaide, therefore was 12 January 1939 and the coldest 8 June 1982.

Interestingly, the same system that brought Adelaide's highest maximum on 12 January 1939 gave Melbourne its highest on the 13th and Sydney its highest on the 14th. Black Friday 13th of January 1939 saw much of southeastern Australia ablaze with bushfires.
