I moved into an abandoned house and had it transfered into my name but the house is not in the best condition. Can I get section 8 with this house in my name?

If its abandoned, doesn't that mean you own it now? Meaning the only thing you have to pay is property taxes, right?

I think you need a loan. You can try to take one out on the house.

Generally - NO.

The home you own is an asset, even if it is not worth very much, it is worth something. Check out HUD's website for more information: http://www.hud.gov/
They might be able to help you fix up your current home.

In regards to another answer, it might be possible to "manipulate the system" - but that is called fraud and you don't want to get in trouble with the Federal Government do you?

Sorry to say the Govt does allow this.
My ex had a section 8 rental and lived in the nice part of Bergen county with me. that is NJ. So you can manipulate the rules.
Sorry to say the govt is lax. But if she could do it, I hope you the best.
