she doesnt want to be admitted, this is her second child and she wanted to have the first at a birthing center. She had complications and wasnt able to. Now its her second and her water broke this morning. She doesnt have strong or consistant contractions and is only dialated 2. If she doesnt get some good progression to her labor, she'll have to be induced and wont be able to have her baby at the birthing center again! any ideas?

*because the water broke already, sex is out and a lot of walking is sort of out. she is leaking so its hard really to walk.

There isn't anything she can do anymore except hope and pray labor progresses. Since her water broke, nothing is really 'safe'. She is going to need to be admitted for the safety and health of her baby whether she likes it or not. It's been what, almost 12 hours? That baby needs to be out by 24. I know how she feels, it sucks, I had to have pitocin, too, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Protocols for When Your Water Breaks Before Labor

-by Gloria Lemay

1. Drink plenty of fluids. Minimum: 8 glasses, spaced throughout the day. Purified water with lemon squeezed in it is good.

2. Allow nothing in vagina. No fingers, no tampons, no oral-genital contact, no bath water, no swimming pool water, no speculum, no penis, nothing whatsoever!

3. Wear something loose-fitting with no panties.

4. If you are leaking and need something for sitting, use clean towels fresh out of a hot dryer.

5. Take your temperature every 4 hours while you are awake. Normal range is 35.5 to 37.3 Degrees Centigrade or 96 to 99 Degrees Fahrenheit. If it goes above the upper ranges, drink some water, retake it and if your temperature remains up call your medical person. It could be a sign of infection.

6. Take 250mg Vitamin C every 3 hours while you are awake. Oranges, grapefruit, kiwi fruit, red peppers are all good sources.

7. No baths. Shower as much as you like.

8. Eat foods that are unconstipating and easy to digest. Especially avoid foods with MSG or nitrates, such as pizza, Chinese food, or deli meats. These foods can make you vomit in the birth process.

9. Be meticulous about toileting. Wipe from front to back, and wash hands carefully after.

l0. If the water is colored green or brown (meconium), or if it has a bad smell (sign of infection), let your medical person know.

If you want to know your baby is doing well, check the baby’s heart rate- have someone put his or her ear against your lower belly or listen through a toilet paper roll. The fetal heart rate should be 140-160 beats a minute. And to monitor the fetal movements in a day, start at 9 a.m. and count each time the baby kicks until 3 p.m. There should be l0 distinct movements (the Cardiff fetal movement test). Contact your medical person if you get less than 10 movements, or if you’re having problems assessing the fetal heart rate.

My own note--nipple stimulation works well to start contractions, but it has to be done for a long time to work.

If her water broke she should be at the birthing center or hospital as there is an increased chance of infection for the baby. If she is only dilated 2cm nothing is going to bring on labor in a time quick enough to prevent possible infection to the baby except inducing labor at the hospital or birthing center.

My Dr. told me walking was the best , But if that is out , I don't know how true it is But I heard that it you go for a ride on a road that has lots of bumps or go across rail roads tracks. They say it helps to drop the baby down in the birth canal . I wish your sister a easy time with the labor, And I wish the baby lots of health . Good Luck to your sister and the new baby .

If her water broke, she needs to go to the hospital.

Even if her contractions aren't heavy, she needs to leave for the birthing center NOW. She should have left immediately. She could be having silent contractions.

I don't quite understand your sister's birthing center--at ours you can easily be induced there.

nipple stimulation. Get out the breast pump or she can use her hands. It will stimulate the uterus. But if its been more than a few hrs she really needs to jsut go to the hospital. An induced labor is not the end of the world, but a baby who gets sick because he is not protected by the amniotic fluid is very serious.

I'm pretty sure walking is the best thing...how about squatting on one of those big exercise balls? Do you have one. I've heard that may help too. Or just squatting w/out the ball, the ball makes it more comfortable though.

How fun a new baby! I hope all goes well for her. Good luck =]

I"ve heard eating spicy food helps. I have heard of people eating a lot of Mexican food to try to induce labor. I am not a dr. so I don't know if that's really true.

She needs to get to the hospital sorry. Labour could be days off and once the water is broken she has an increased risk of infection.

the one and most important thing to think about is the baby's heartbeat...if you don't have a way to listen to it then her need to deliver at a birthing centre is secondary.
