I always hated math growing up and I'm currently in college doing pre-med. I had the same problem as you because every math teacher I had in high school sucked. I got an A in one class because the teacher was easy and she even gave us extra credit if we sold her dieting products to our family. Also, I didn't have enough guidance in that area and didn't even know what was best for me to take in order to prepare for college. I love the fact that you are eager to learn it and not giving up so it will help you in the long run. Just keep working hard, get tutoring. If you are financially well off, try Sylvan Learning Center. It can be expensive, but you'll get professional help by a dedicated staff. Also, try studying with others in a group at least once a week to go over the material. You'll be surprised at how much classmates can help each other when they share their knowledge out loud. Also, do many practice problems and ask your teacher any questions you have after class. Good luck!

Good for you not wanting to give up.
Its like a lot of things in life - hard for a while, but there will come a point (believe me) where all of a sudden something will just click for you. And you will not BELIEVE the rush of adrenalin and pure pleasure that will create in you.
Its truly an amazing feeling.

So first - take a deep breath and relax.

Now, take it one step at a time. Learn and master the basics, then as you get them down cold go on to the next level.
Just like a video game - you have to work hard to get through the lower levels (sometimes you end up "dying" a lot before you get past it). Then the next level, and that is a challenge too, but it will seem to get a little easier.

Find someone you trust that is patient and willing to work with you one-on-one to get the basic stuff. A tutor, an older brother or sister, maybe another family member or a friend.
Some of the best coaches are those "nerds" that the other kids pick on - they are a lot smarter than they are given credit for, and are usually pretty sympathetic.

Don't be afraid to ask someone for help.
And keep going - it may take some time (and that can be frustrating) but if you keep at it, it will happen.

Good luck.

WOW, you know algebra in HS took a while to click for me, while geometry was a cake walk. Can you afford a tutor? Can you befriend a math geek, and get some help for free in exchange for lessons in something you know how to do really well?

The only thing I can promise you is this; do NOT let math psyche you out! Open your mind a tad, and tell yourself it's just all about fun puzzles, change your attitude about it, and you might surprise yourself! Sometimes the numbers start swimming on the page...take one step at a time, break down complex problems into smaller bits, and if that doesn't work, ask your teacher for extra help...he or she will be so happy to give it to you, because you actually give a damn.

What ever you do, don't give up!!

I'm in my second year of college after having graduate from high school 17 years ago, and of all things, majoring in mathematics!

Stay on your teachers to help you, that's what they are there for. There are also loads of online resources.

www.purplemath.com
www.mathwords.com
www.math.com (of course, lol)

many many more, just google math or algebra help

Whether you have financial resources or not, don't waste your money on a "commercialized" tutoring place. Hire one of the smart kids in school, at least they really love the math (make a friend whilst your at it), usually those "commercialized" tutoring places only care about the money. Been there, done that.

good luck, and don't give up!
