Do I need a fashion degree to become a fashion journalist or can I just have a basic Journalism degree? I really want to write and fashion is my one big thing I know I can write about besides other things but fashion is my main goal as a writer. So would I have to major in fashion or just journalism?

I would get a degree in Journalism. Your goal is to write. Eventually you can write solely about fashion. A Journalism degree is sufficient to write about fashion if you are knowledgeable about fashion.

You don't need a fashion degree to be a fashion writer, a Journalism degree is what you need....but if I were you I'd try to obtain internships with fashion magazines, stuff like that, just some sort of fashion-related writing experience, even if just for your school paper.

I personally would major in something like English and minor in Journalism because while majoring in journalism teaches you the "know how" of the job, majoring in a liberal arts area betters you in knowing how to think critically and creatively. There are journalists who majored in things like Sociology, but obtained experience in Journalism through jobs and internships and landed paying jobs like that. But, of course majoring in Journalism would be just fine.

A journalism major would give you the best skills. Your ultimate job is to write. How about majoring in journalism and minoring in fashion? Two universities that have a good combination of both are Baylor (Texas) and Purdue (Indiana).

It would be irresponsible to encourage any student to enter Journalism today. "Fashion Journalism" would be double foolish. Journalism is dying. This includes newspapers, and the glossy magazines which are the staple of "Fashion Journalism".
