OMG yes, some of the best bands in the world get there sound from the bass player. The only way you can adviod it is if you have a really good drummer. And I mean he/she needs to be good. Dont try to start a band with out a bass player. Its really easy to pick up the bass. It takes a while to get good but I think you should find some one or atleast have one of the guitarist play bass untill you find some one/

I initially want to say hell ya because i can't stand playing with a drummer and no bass, even if I have a another guitar player. I miss it and everything seems off. But you have a key board to fill in it's place (kinda). If you listen to Rush you hear Geddy Lee play both bass & keyboard, his live playing sounds great and he just switches back and forth and doesn't miss a beat, but he is awesome. Just try it out and see what it feels like with out a bass. If it works, it works

Yes, the bass player is extremely important. And, bass guitar is also one of the easier instruments to learn, so if you have a buddy who can't play anything right now, but they would like to be in the band, maybe they should consider learning the bass.

And remember, every member of the band is of equal importance.
