My 6 month old has been breastfeeding since the day he was born and now all of a sudden it hurts when he eats and the pain is in my nipple and they just down right hurt. It feels like he is just biting them over and over again but he has no teeth. I have gotten to the point where I am considering switching him to the bottle but don't wanna do that because I breastfed my older son for 18 months. What could be causing this pain and how do I switch him to a bottle if this pain doesn't go away, we have tried giving him a bottle a few times in the past and he wants nothing to do with them. I have no clue what to do all I know is that I can't handle this pain for much longer.

a clogged duct or a breast infection? Is there any tenderness in the breast whenhe's not nursing? Is it red or warm to the touch? Call your dr, you may need to get it looked at and possible take some antibiotics. Good luck, I hope you can keep going with the breastfeeding!!!

Please don't switch to a bottle, this can most likely be treated.

The first thing you need to look into is thrush. Most treatments for thrush are quite safe whether you and the baby have thrush or not. These include grapefruit seed extract (both orally for mom and baby and in the babies mouth and on the moms nipples), and probiotics. Also boiling all pacifiers daily. And adding a half cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle of laundry (particularly bras, cloth diapers, and anything that goes in the baby's mouth) and either drying on high or in the sun.

Other possibilities include
* teething -changes in the babies saliva can cause nipple pain, teething can also cause a poor latch
* return of menstruation -pain may also occur around ovulation
* skin irritation -your nipples could be reacting to something the baby is eating, new creams, soaps, detergent, etc
* plugged ducts or mastitis

Please speak to a lactation consultant, it doesn't hurt to have someone assess the latch, and look for thrush or other problems. Your doctor also may be helpful but I wouldn't bet on it.

I had the same thing at 9 months and my baby had thrush. You can look in his mouth and if you see whiteness that looks caked on, that's probably what it is. You will not have any noticeable symptoms on you. I think it is caused by an imbalance of sugars. If your baby just started on solids, maybe he is getting too much fruit or something. It is very easy to treat. You can get gentian violet from Walgreens or any drugstore and use that. My Dr also said to give a little bit of plain unsweetened yogurt once or twice a day, it helps fight the infection. If that doesn't work, you can get a prescription from your Dr, but they usually do that as a last resort. Keep trying to breastfeed, it will help your baby fight this faster also.

Ahh, check the babies mouth. If you see white patches it could be thrush...a yeast infection. Which causes a tremendous amt. of pain when passed to your nipples. I am a seasoned BFing mom and I ended up with it and had no idea what the deal was. I just figured he wasn't latching properly and it was the worst pain in the world. I had it for 3 or 4 weeks and just nursed through it thinking things would get better.
Is it a deap pain even when you think about nursing...ugh. That was so horrible. Just for your own sanity...see your midwife/doctor ASAP.

One thing I noticed is that when my son and I both fall asleep while he is on the breast, it hurts (really bad) while be breatfeeds for the next couple days. Does he stay at the breast after there is no more milk?
