There are no true democracies. There are three major regimes (a system or style of government)

totalitarian regimes ... relating to or operating a centralized government system in which a single party without opposition rules over political, economic, social, and cultural life

democratic regimes ... the free and equal right of every person to participate in a system of government, often practiced by electing representatives of the people by the majority of the people

authoritarian regimes ... belonging to or believing in a political system in which obedience to the ruling person or group is strongly enforced

The U.S. is a (democratic) Republic
