Star me if you agree with this philosophy.

When somebody insults you in a language you can't understand, whats the point of insulting you in another language. You would not be offended by it should you not understand it and it would be a waste of time for the insulter. Also, to start off with, the insult could not be that offensive in english if you have to say it in another language for an attempt of emphasis.

This is called the foriegn tounge philosophy

I agree.. But I must admit it IS kinda funny to insult people in other languages.. Especially when they end up searching on the internet for the meaning...

In terms of insults, unless I am confident that what is being said is intended as an insult, I wouldn't assume that the use of a foreign language was intended to harm me.

As an ethical issue, I think language is a means to alienate and to bring closeness. I would choose to include the non-native speaker by explaining what is being said and finding a way to include them in the conversation.

Dealing with someone who is using insulting language rather than someone we feel insulted by in terms of the their behaviours are two separate issues for me.

I am an English speaker, but i do find languages interesting and always encourage people to teach me a word or two in their native tongue. Some people are not as inclusive as this in their use of language and their social skills.
