yep, left hand drops off the bars with either a hand or a couple of fingers extended (similar to a lazy peace sign)... merely a friendly gesture of a wave...
return it when possible (safely)

It's a way of saying hi and acknowledging you as a fellow rider and part of the two wheel family. Wave back if waved to but you can initiate the wave yourself. You don't have to wait for the other guy to wave first. If you can't take that left hand off the grip due to traffic conditions, a simple nod of the head will work. Keep riding and keep waving.

It's a friendly wave and conveys this message:
"Keep the rubber side down."
If fingers are extended, sometimes it's a count of how many motorcycles are following in the party.
If only the middle finger is extended, it means he's riding a Harley and you're on a motorcycle that isn't American-made.

Pink has your answer on this. Wave....and wave often. Too many newbie's out there don't know what the wave is at all. I wave to all bikes, trikes, scooters, etc.
