I used to work for a major U.S. airline. They have always been very selective about hiring, but here are the highlights:
1. Fluency in foreign languages always helps.
2. Customer service experience is very important. Having worked for a restaurant, hotel, or travel company has always been helpful.
3. Good health is very important. In case of an on-board problem, they do not want anybody dependent upon glasses, medicines, or other physical constraints.
4. They are super sensitive about any history of substance abuse.
5. Because of the value of the equipment, they do very strict reference checks.
6. They look very carefully for personalities that mesh well with passengers and other crew members.
7. It helps to have references from people in airline business.
