Right,
You need 16 ounces of flakes, but they are in 11/16th Oz packages.

X * 11/16 =16

or X * 11 * ( 1/16) = 16

You need to solve for X, by moving the other numbers (11 and 1/16) to the right side of the equation leaving only X on the left.

All of the numbers on the left side are multiplied together, which makes this one simple.

Multiplication is the inverse of division, just like addition and subtraction.

So you can divide the left side of the equation by 11, and you must be fare, so divide the right side of the equation by 11 as well.

[X * 11 * ( 1/16) ]/11 = 16/11

Example 11/11=1 2/2=1 1/1=1

On the left side, the 11 on the bottom, cancles the 11 on the top. 11/11=1 this leaves
X * (1/16) = 16/11

Now get rid of the ( 1/16) on the left by multiplying both sides of the equation by 16, so that the 1/16 on the left will cancel out.
X * (1/16) * 16 = 16(16/11)

The 16 on top and bottom cancel out on the left side leaving.

X* ( 1/1) = 16(16/11)

Because 1/1 =1, and multiplying by 1 doesnt chang the answser this leaves.

X =16*16/11 = 23.2727...

16*16=256 so 16*16/11 is 256 / 11

256/11 goes 23 times with remainder of 3

So X * 11/16 =16
X = 23 + 3/11 = 23.272727...

Multiply 11/16 times 1/16. That gives you 11/256. Reduce that by dividing 11 into each one and that gives you 23 3/11th.

I took the short cut.

divide 11 by 16 = .6875

That means 68.75% of an ounce.

Then, get the 16 ounces and divide it by .6875

You get 23.2727272727.....

convert the .272727272 to a fraction

.27272727..../100 Divide by 9 since (3*9) are factors of 27.

you get 3/11

Then you get 23 3/11

And while the other guys are stuck in step 1, you are well off on your way to dinner!

Sounds like you're having problems setting up the problem.

(number of packages needed) x (weight of each package) = (weight needed)

N x 11/16 oz. = 16 oz.

N= 16 / (11/16) = (16 x 16) /11

N = 256 /11 =23 3/11

That help?
