Recently I went to my dad's school to visit and every single teacher's first reaction was "oh your son is so cute/good looking/handsome".

I know this comes off as a very conceited question, but hey it did happen and it's the internet so whatever, anyway were they just being polite or were they serious?

I kinda want to know because my self esteem went up haha.

They probably meant you were good looking because it was the first thing out of their mouths.

Every father thinks his average son is handsome and smart. Only you know the truth. It is a pat answer when you meet someone's child. At least you know you're not ugly. And because you can look in the mirror, you should already know the truth. But then bueaty is in the eye of the beholder. A good looking man can open his mouth and become ugly. A ugly man becomes more attractive as he pleases you. So does it matter?

Everyone has to make a comment after someone is introduced, so many people just choose to say the obvious. Though they believe it to be true, they are really trying to get the conversation going.

My husband was a professor at a local university, and my son would go to class with him sometimes. My son used to say, "take out a clean sheet of paper." The class would groan because that signaled a pop quiz. So my son would brag about how he gave dad's classes a pop quiz. (The first thing they said about my son, too, was how much he resembled his father).

Don't let your head get too big. They were just talking about genetics. It's much better to be complemented on your character, skills, integrity, intelligence....

It depends on the way in which they said it. Still it's most likely that were being completely serious. If they thought you were unattractive or unsightly they would have said nothing at all about your appearance and instead complimented attributes such as your smile, mannerisms, etc.
