My wife was driving my old Dodge ES Turbo convertible, (1986, with 50K miles), she parked it on a slope and turned off the engine.

She started up to leave and the car will not get into gear. I tried to pull it inot gear but no luck. It is an automatic.

What is wrong???? And can I fix it???

Is it in need of transmission fluid? I know little about cars.

Thanks!!

the park selector pin is stuck in the transmission because it's on a slope, if you can get the car on flat ground or have someone push the car from behind enough to take the tension off the tranny it will come out of park for you.

No it's not low on fluid,i say the tranny is either fried and locked,or the linkige is bound up,be sure to block all tires then get under it and try to do it with your strenth by hand,or have acouple of friends push the truck to take wieght off it and it will probaly go into any gear then hold brake on put it back into park and turn it over, tell her to use the emergency brake before putting into park, especialy on a slop.

If the gear shifter will not move at all and its on a hill, start car,and either push or pull pressure to the up hill direction, its probably got just enought down hill pressure to keep the shifter from moving.Happens a lot when cars are parked down hill and they roll into a curb as you let off brake.....George

They're absolutely right. It's called "torquelock". The slope made your vehicle roll and the linkage is binding. This can be prevented by engaging your emergency or handbrake let the vehicle come to a rest and then putting your car in park.

Did you examine the point of the grasp fluid interior the reservoir. My daughter's 'ninety 8 Civic grasp have been given low on fluid and have been given fantastically much not possible to shift. seems the lid on the reservoir wasn't sealing and the fluid might burp out somewhat at a time. additionally examine to work out if the fluid have been given contaminated with water in a manner.

Pull harder.
The drive train lock in the tranny is binding up a little.

Tell her to set the parking brake BEFORE putting it in park next time.

first thing you want to do is check if the transmission fluid is low or out. if its low put some in it and then try it .if it out of fluid then you need a new transmission. now if its full then it mit be stuck because your on a hill .now if its possable try to get it on level ground then try it if that dont work then you need to take it to some one to look at it ok. go luck........................................................lonewolf
