bonjour red wine, miss you
all the respect for you and for all who answered this question...i'm 100% with you but it doesnt mean that i can't deny that being veiled is fard, yes it is although i see that being veiled is not about the hair or the body but it's also about the heart too...but as u said: did we all know or do the 5 principals pillars, and the hijab is the only thing that remains for us to be a perfect muslim??? i don't think so..
for me yes i know meqdar el zakkah, and i pay it every year cuz i work now n i have my own money, i pray the 5 prayers per day, and i fast, i did 3omra but i didnt do the hij...
i'm not veiled n i hate te hijab but i confess it's a fard n i must do it one day, i just ask god to show me the right way we yehdina kolena...
but at the end i wanna say being veiled is not the whole issue...it's useless when u're veiled n u dont have any ethics or morals...
u know what....i hate to discuss about this issue...in this country...

I don't also understand why we keep repeating this question.
RedWine and Others, why do you care about people who judge others by appearance, if this is really what you think?
The only one who will judge you is Allah, thats it.
I said before, you need to ask yourself "Allah pleased with me or not, what am I doing right, and what am I doing wrong?" and dont worry about people.
The very most important thing really is that you should not lie to yourself, and try convince yourself that you are doing right while you actually doing wrong. this is Shaitan's work.
That's a general advice, and it is really between you and Allah after that.
The Hijab subject was never an issue before, it was surfaced because of the West as usual, when France and other countries banned Hijab from some places, then it was the most spoken subject about. Then you got some sick people in Egypt supporting banning the Hijab, and here of course you get a natural reaction from Mulims. I think it is expected.
The point I agree with you is the Zakat for example. Not many people as you said know Meqdar al zakat. and I believe you should educate friends and family if you found that they don't know, and everybody should do the same. I support your point here, because we don't have religious education in Egypt.

Red wine: Do not worry , with hijab or without hijab the majority of the Egyptian males do not respect the females , it is culture, and also character disorder (for many reasons) -called* psychological sexual compulsion - and one of the physical reasons of that ,is the lack of the sexual capability (plus other reasons) of these men, so they substitute this ability, by a fake macho attitude toward females , as if they are wow, (bottom line they treat women as maidens) , so it is not matter of hijap or not, Instead of occupying ourselves with such subjects , I wonder why no one has answered my question about the expectation of the future exchange of the Egyptian pound, I received only one answer from a Briton ( or these subjects are not of an interest to our mucho men and veiled girls)??

* steps for treatment:
Acceptance of the disease and its consequences.
Commitment to change.
Recognition of the person's inability to control the compulsion
There are also lots of medications which help to regain the ability plus good nutrition and sport

we all try to do all the five pillars of Islam, what makes a difference whether or not u wear one? we are all muslimeen and we are all put on this earth for one thing, the appearance doesn't matter, i wear hijab and i bet i am the same as a girl who doesn't wear a hijab...and you know when u say all this it is like u are trying to look for something for people to talk about the girls who wear hijab like u are trying to get back at us...yes hijab is fard and yes girls who don't wear it are always going to be looked at as if they aren't, i said as if, they are not good muslimat, but that is entirely NOT true...

Asalam alaikum. Just a note; lets say there are 3 million people at The Hajj this year. There are roughly 1.5 billion muslims....the % of muslims going to Hajj is therefore less than 1 10th of 1 percent. Multiply this over a life time, and it still comes out that less than 2% of muslims ever go to Hajj...that is no excuse not to try, but it is the reality of things. The cost for the vast majority of muslims is prohibitive....I knew I couldnt afford Hajj, at least now, so I went to Umrah. I know its not the same thing, but when I was there i made the intention, insha'Allah, one day to return for the Hajj. I pray we all make it.
Hijab doesnt cost a thing. It is an answer to everything? Of course not. But its not just for the woman wearing it (correctly) its a protection for me as well, to help lower thier gaze.
I will say this, how many brothers here have beards? This is a fard by all four of the madhabs...we cant preach too much about sisters in hijab, if we dont even have beards. salaams

Hello Redwine,
A direct answer to yr question is yes i know meqdar el zakka and on everything even the gold that we keep. As for Haj may Allah (swt) help me fullfil this fard.
I just have to add, i am not veiled myself (yet), however i have the utmost respect for myself and everybody else (veiled or not). I never judge a person by his/her appearance coz i have this strong belief that we r all humans, thus we r all full of faults. THERE R NO ANGELS ON EARTH.
Hope i helped.
Edit: anyone who is shallow enough to judge me by my appearence, has lost a chance to know a really good muslimah.

You know if we disagree, still we are friends.
Actually I agree with your freedom of choice and with many things you mentioned, but I disagree with you in one main and very important point. As I know you are reasonable and cultured lady I know we can convince each other.
Let me first make our disagreement point very clear. It's [Fard] or not. I'm speaking here about what I understand it's different between my opinion and yours. I'm sure if we discuss only this point you'll be convinced.
It's very easy : I say it's [fard] as all scholars, shiekhs or who ever authorized to make Fatwa agreed that it's fard. If you say it's not fard can you give me any name of some one authorized to make fatwa or scholar or shiekh who said it's not fard in the normal case of living ?
Take care I'm not discussing here you wear it or not. I'm discussing the only real important topic {fard or not fard} only this.
Edit : It was the most important for me to stress that it's fard. If we speak about hajj, it's something else. We should discuss it in Arabic as I have to write إ٠استطعتÙ
اÙÙ٠سبÙÙا
Edit : I wanted to answer all your questions but when you mix many important topics together I need pages to answer while I don't like long answers. I suggest we discuss every topic alone.

i think hijab is not just about hair but it's about the whole body and the attitude too.
many women wearing the false hijab are worse than who are not wearing; so rape cannot be projected to not wearing hijab.
the real hijab was ordered by the prophet and in qur2an and don't tell me it's sunnah, and if it were with which hand do you eat can you eat with your left hand because eating with your right hand is just "sunnah"
all people i guess know meqdar el zakah, and in Egypt you can see how hajj prices are so high only rich can do it now.
it's wrong to judge the person by his appearance that's evidence:" one day a man came to Omar and told him to let another man take the lead of a district Omar refused and said you may have seen this man in the mosque humming with words ".

hijab is not just appearance it is how you act in your life
you seem to forgot something not all women give al zakah because they are the responsibility of their fathers or husbands
and AL hajj is only fard on those who can afford it only once in their lives
and most Muslims can not afford it

Red wine, Gigi and Isodora, i agree with you two 100%, some of these attitudes just go to show the Saudi thinking that is impacting on Egyptian society, its very sad for women.
People think that a cloth will stop a women being raped! 8 years ago i was on the metro going from Helwan to Maadi I was with my husband and some friends, it got crowed and guess what happened i felt a hand on my private parts, not that my husband would grab me in public but i looked to see where, were his hands they were holding the rail, so he was one of the men in the crowd. I WAS VEILED!!!! Thats by far not the only story, time or issue. I never took the metro again ever, i had nightmares about the dog that did this, no one has the right to touch a women unless he pays for her in the wedding, regardless if she is velied or not!
