Probably the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. I can't imagine what sort of effect that had on the population -- 9/11 is the only thing that can compare. I'm not sure how long America would have been able to stay on the sidelines of the war, but it surely changed the calculus of events in the years to come.

The atomic bomb in Japan in 1945 could be considered "spectacular," but I'm not sure it had the effects of Pearl Harbor. I could be talked into it, though.

While there were many spectacular events, I'd say it was dropping the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. It's the main event that led to the end of WW II. And it unleashed huge changes in international diplomacy and national defense. We're still living with its consequences today, and we will forever, no doubt.
