my house was built in 1998 it has a central ac unit. just about 2 days ago i had the fan on and there was continuous noise coming from inside the furnace, it souded like an old blower problem. then when i swith from fan to cool there was no noise only at the end when the cooling interval was shutting off, and the same noise occured. today my ac unit is not working at all what could be the problem. all i can think of is a motor by the blower fan, if it carries one. all other help welcome.

the most likely problem is the motor...if it made noise while running withou the ac running and none until the end of the cycle with ac running the most likely reson is that warm air is far easier for a blower to move and the load on the blower is less...when the ac is running it causes more load to be on the blower because cold air is harder to move than warm air...with more of a load on the blower it might just be loading it up enough to cancel the noise until the end of the cooling cycle

I think bullpit is right the fan usually has 3-5 speeds. There are diffrent speeds for Fan On and Cool. Souds to me like your blower motor is going. Fairly easy to replace if you are somewhat handy. Call Grainger or McMaster-Carr or whoever you have around you and give them all the info off the old motor. They will help.

Hard to tell without being there. It would be an idea to have a service tech look at it. Does not make sense that it only does it in fan mode, as the fan runs in both fan and cool

YOUR BLOWER WHEEL IS JUST TOUCHING THE BLOWER HOUSING. OPEN UP THE BLOWER COMPARTMENT AND LOOSEN THE WHEEL AND MOVE IT AWAY FROM THE SIDE WHERE IT IS SCRAPING THE HOUSING AND RE-TIGHTEN IT. IT WILL WORK FINE AFTER THAT. IT JUST WORE THE BEARING A LITTLE AND IT WAS CLOSE TO THE HOUSING AND STARTED RUBBING AT TIMES.
