When multiplying the square root of a number times the square root of that same number, the answer is just that number.

(root5 - 2)(root5 + 3)

FOIL it.

5 + 3root5 - 2root5 - 6

You can subtract square roots as long as they have the same numbers under the radicals. Subtract the numbers in front and keep the number inside.

-1 + root5

Move this around because of the negative in front.

root5 - 1
