It was Joseph Priestley. Not so much invented, discovered really. Variations are still in use. The mask is only there so the patient can't smell the booze on the surgeons breath!

Joseph Priestley invented laughing gas in 1775. It is still in use commonly for dentist offices for patients who have to undergo small operations such as veneers, pulling out teeth, or fixing cavity spots. Yes they use masks because the N2) can easily leak out of the masks and spread out into the air. But usually it doesn't leak and doesn't usually end up going all over a room.

Nitrous oxide, dinitrogen oxide or dinitrogen monoxide, is a chemical compound with chemical formula N2O. Under room conditions, it is a colorless non-flammable gas, with a pleasant, slightly sweet odor and taste. It is used in surgery and dentistry for its anaesthetic and analgesic effects, where it is commonly known as "laughing gas" due to the euphoric effects of inhaling it.

The gas was first synthesized by English chemist and natural philosopher Joseph Priestley in 1775.

It's still in use, most often by dentists.

Surgeons wear masks so they won't contaminate the sterile surgery area.

They use it for patients who undergo dental surgery. It relaxes them (they used it on my brother.) Laughing gas is Nitrous oxide (N2O), and is especially used as an anesthetic.

Invented by English chemist and natural philosopher Joseph Priestley in 1775 (origonally called phlogisticated nitrous air by Priestley.)
