live in a place like Venice with canals for transportation or a place with roadways and highways like America

With all the Global Warming, ice melting, sea level rising, e.t.c, I think Venice will soon be flooded (Infact, parts of it are often flooding already...), so I guess it is not a good idea if you plan to live there for quite some time (e.g. 20 years or more). However a good alternative is Amsterdam in Holland.

In a town like Venice you would walk a lot, because the public transport is restricted to the canals, (and expensive if you want a 'taxi'.)

Go to Amsterdam.
You will still have canals, for if you prefer to travel by water, but the street system allows you to take bus, tram or your own car.
Best of both.

If you need to 'plan' a new town, make sure you make streets that allow for trucks, just to make sure the people moving house will be able to bring their things into the house.
It will be very expensive to change from road transport to water transport at the edge of town, just for that last little bit.

Because I like water and love boats I'd prefer living in a place like Venice.
