I don't have any disrespect to the history of this football program but that is what it is its history and I don't think they should be given a free ticket to a major bowl because of their past, that was then this is now. No other team in the nation has the benefit they do. They are not in a conference, but they are still automatic to a BCS bowl game, so is that to say if Navy was to be crushed by Michigan and SoCal then beat a handful of nobodies would they be going to say the Orange, Fiesta, Rose, or Sugar bowl? The answer is no, because they are not Notre Dame. No offense to Irish fans but this school needs to join a conference, a BCS conference that is, or put up a Boise State of last year season performance to get the honor of playing in a major bowl, and stop relying on their history...Joe Montana, Tim Brown, Paul Horning and countless others graduated years and years and years ago, and the history of ND's last 10 bowls don't look so hot.

I have never been a fan of Notre Dame and i was very happy to see them get crushed against LSU last year. I dont see how everyone thinks they are "america's team" when they done back it up in big games. I think after the prestige thing dies down and they stop getting top recruits they will slowly fade down to a lower stature

Why do they need to join a conference? Everyone else talks about how their schedule is too difficult for them to win 7 games and you say that the rest of their schedule is a handful of nobodies? Why is being in a conference a panacea? A few years back Florida St. locked up their division and then just coasted through the regular season before winning the ACC Championship and going to the Orange Bowl at what, 8-4? Is that fair to teams that were objectively better than FSU? If anything, conferences hurt these teams.
Furthermore, the BCS is not about fairness, it is about money. Which is a large part of the reason why it's an ineffective good old boys system. The problem isn't Notre Dame- their academic standards are second to none and they sure have a lot more cojones in scheduling than most other programs with national championship aspirations- but more the state of college football at-large, especially the championship selection process.

Where does everyone get this bizarre idea that Notre Dame gets some sort of "special" treatment when it comes to the BCS bowl selection?
The truth of the matter is this: The only way Notre Dame gets an automatic berth to the BCS only if they're ranked in the top eight in the BCS standings. Otherwise, they must have nine wins and be ranked in the top fourteen just to be considered an eligible at-large team, which still doesn't guarantee anything.
Given that there are ten open berths in BCS bowl games, how is this unfair? If Notre Dame were to end up ranked ninth or tenth in the BCS poll, chances are they would NOT get to go to a BCS bowl, because lower-ranked teams will get automatic berths based solely upon the fact they were champions of a weak conference.
Seriously, hate on ND all you want... it's not going to matter this year, because right now a berth in the Weedeater Bowl looks like it would be a major accomplishment.

The Irish are like the Yankees. You love them or hate them. Being a Notre Dame fan I love them, but as a Yankee hater, I can understand the frustration of some fans.
The main issue is money. ND has an exclusive home game contract with NBC because they command the type of viewership (whether from lovers or haters) that makes the network big bucks.
The same with a BCS bowl. By picking ND for a BCS bowl, that bowl and network stand to make a lot more money than if they picked just another SEC or Big 10 team. It has nothing to do with trying to determine whether a 10-2 ND team is better than a 10-2 Wisconsin team or whoever. It doesn't matter. ND commands more viewers than basically any other team in the country. Unfortunately for ND fans, that is why ND always gets obliterated in bowl games. They are put in games that they have no business being in.
ND will never join a conference... but this is just another reason for a College Football playoff.

Notre Dame popularized college football on a national level. Notre Dame brings in more money. It's not their fault that conferences developed all around them. They choose not to join a conference because it doesn't benefit them. They have a deal with the BCS, because the BCS needs Notre Dame. Notre Dame is rebuilding this year. Look at the recruiting classes Charlie Wiess is bringing in? #1 rank for 2008. #1 prospect last year. Notre Dame will come back to national prominence, in more than just name, very soon, enjoy hating now.

now what i dont get is all of you who talk down on the fighting irish,(especially those in the big ten) always say, "hey irish, why dont you join the big ten? you would bring good competition to the conference and give us an even number so we can have a real conf championship game." then we say no. thats where we start getting dogged saying we are underrated. if you really dont think we are a quality football team, why would you want us in your conference? maybe because awin against us would move you up in the polls more than say, boston college? i think so. you are all upset because you dont have a shot at the blue and gold. and for the one who said the irish could go 10-2 and still get into a NC game.....i dont think so. with us being an independant team, its harder for us to get to that game. if we dont start the season ranked, we wouldnt get that game, regardless of who we play. ive been a fan of the irish forever. and if we joined the big ten we wouldnt have our big rival, USC. now i know all of you know how important a rival game is. i mean if osu or mich left the big ten, it would be devestating, no osu mich game? to some people, college football would come to an end.

Well I think Notre Dame is very overated. They always end up worse than they start. Now back in the day they were REALLY the team to beat. Now they are more of a "big name" to beat. Since they have no Conference they get to run Political Compains like Florida did to go to BCS bowls. Notre Dame could be 10-2(highly doubted) and in a Big Bowl even a NC Game but if Wake Forest went 12-0 they would likely end up at the Orange Bowl.

Its quite simple, if you hate 'em or love 'em Notre Dame brings butts to the stadiums and eyes to the tv. They get to bcs games because bcs games are about making money and Notre dame will give you tons of ratings and a sold out stadium.

Notre Dame is the most storied college football program in history, whether you like them or not...Weis better correct the situation fast (i.e. realize that Jimmy Clausen should be the starting QB), or else he'll be feeling the pressure just like Lloyd Carr is at Michigan...

Well, you won't have to worry about a BCS bowl for them this year, because they're going to lose at least 5.
