They worked hard, they supported eachother, if one had a job he tried to get others into the same place, they only married once in most cases, they formed unions and had some fierce strikes. They showed a sense of pride, and never gave up. The Irish were not afraid to work, and they attended church, it was a different time BUT, here's what happened when the Black man decided to move forward. First their was as much if not greater amount of prejudice. Many stories went around that black people were lazy, no account, shuffle along vagabonds, most not true. But the die had been cast, and the black man's plight grew harder. The separation or segragation of the Black man for so many years was another factor, right up until the 1960's in the south. Even during WW2, black troops were separated from white troops, and black troops fought well and hard and have some of the most decorated units of WW2......BUT here is where the system failed the Black man, fails him today, and will fail him tommorow. The Government seeing the struggle of the Black Man comes up with Welfare after WW2. The intention was good, the results are a disaster that goes on yet today. No incentive for the Black man to work, he gets $$$$ if he doesn't try, so he doesn't try any longer, this follows the break down of the family unit, multiple wifes, multiple girlfriends pregnant, drinking doping, the entire thing. Then the Black man gets hit on by his own, people like Al Sharpton, and Jesse Jackson, they convince the black man to let them be their "witch doctors" and think for them, and on the way give us lots of jack to do it. The Democrats also see this as an opportunity to advance their slave like agenda and tell the Black man they can't do without the democrats doing the thinking for them. This is called the Plantation theory of life. The black man ends up again on the bottom of the food chain. Black men that do something on there own, bail out on the rest which is just wrong. In any event, since the end of WW2 the US has seen multiple groups of Asians [chinese, Vietnese, Cambodians, thia's], South American's [ Cubans, Columbians, Dominicans], ethnetcs from Russia, Eastern Europe and now the Mexicans all arrive in the USA, and pass by the Black man on the economic scale because the black man listens to 1] The democrats, 2] Jesse, and 3] Al, all who suck the creative value out of the black man with promises they never intend to firefill, and that's the story my dear Watson!

My grandmother and all my great grand parents were born in Ireland. One factor is an Irish person may have been able to act like they were from Wales or something. If you are black you can't claim not to be black.
Many African Americans are very successful Middle class Americans. Heard of Barak Obama or Oprah Winfrey?
Also some cities like Boston, Philadelphia and New York the Irish took over.
100 years ago if a man had a strong back and could work he had a job. My great grand father arrived in New York about 1890 and was good with horses and he got a job the 1st day and kept it the rest of his life.

Back in the day you either worked or starved. The government didn't hand out money.
A lot of the time social programs stifle many people's potential and make them apathetic. It can do more harm than good for the welfare recipients and our society.
