That's because they don't remove the voicebox, they sever the vocal cords, and I'm not at all sure they do that to cats. Cats aren't usually loud enough to make such an operation necessary.

Now dogs are different. My vet had two border collies--shelties, the yappiest dogs you've ever seen. But she loved the breed, so she personally did the operation and snipped the vocal cords. The dogs still bark, but now it sounds like a little whisper.

It's wrong to declaw a cat, I think, because they take part of the kitty's finger with the claw, and some cats even are traumatized by losing the claws and are not emotionally normal ever again.

It's not wrong to snip an animal's vocal cords, because there's a very high risk that a loud animal will bother humans, maybe even to the extent that the owners turn the animals over to the pet shelter where they may be killed. If the dogs can't be taught to hush, especially at night, snipping their cords can mean spending the rest of their lives with their loving family, and that, obviously is what makes both pet and family happy.

Take care sweetie,

"Surgical Bark Removal – the Vocal Cordectomy Dog Surgery
The cordectomy is a last resort for the incessant barker. It shouldn’t be used unless you’ve tried and failed with training, and less drastic methods. If there is nothing else to try, and it’s now surgery or the pound, you may decide to have your dog “de-barked”. With the dog anaesthetized, the veterinarian removes all or part of the dog’s vocal cord. There are two methods: in one, the surgeon goes in through the mouth. In the second method, the surgeon goes in through the voice box (larynx). The second method costs a bit more but is preferable because the dog’s airway remains free of scar tissue. This surgery does not create a totally silent dog, but one with a modified bark that is softer and hoarser than it’s original. "

This website also lists other, less drastic, alternatives.

It is called a cordectomy. It is a lot less cruel than a shock collar. It is very quick if they just cut the chords. It doesn't stop the dog from barking, it just stops the highpitched barking sound. The dog doesn't even know it is done. It's a low-risk procedure with few complications. I think it is a lot less cruel than many things could be.

De-barking-not nice. And the removal of dew claws is,in my humble opinion a good thing for the dog. When they run through something and rip them off as an adult, it is FAR MORE PAINFUL than removing them as newborns!!!

A lot of times it's called "de-bark" for dogs but thats not a technical term. I haven't heard it called anything else and I used to work at Petsmart.
Yeah its not the best idea. The dogs in my opinion sound worse when they have it done because their bark sounds like a loud whispher...

cruelty, my neighbor's cat was adorable, fun, and loving, and one day in it's ultimate tiredness of being couped up, it found a window loose and jumped out of it ...it had no claws to defend itself or run up a tree, and a dog got hold of it and injured it internally... it took 3 days of suffering before it died ...i sure do miss the little bugger
