2 rural canadian couples with a modest incomes want to take a trip to europe fall 2008.Just starting to plan-want to start in Frankfurt.Luv the mtns,beer,b&b's,Paris a must=no uk.,train travel??

1. Get everyone to agree what countries to visit.

2. Buy one of Rick Steves' travel guides, they're geared to budget travel and have excellent suggestions for safety and getting the most out of your trip.

3. Pack only one small bag, space is limited in hotels, on trains and in taxis. Rick Steves says something like... if you forget it, you can buy it. If you can't buy it, ask yourself how millions of people get along without it. :-)

4. Visit the Rick Steves website, particularly the "Graffiti Wall" often while planning your trip. There are thousands of posts from people who've been where you're going.

My experiences with travel in Europe have led me to understand that I see more and have more great travel stories if I leave a certain amount of flexibility in my plans. Go with an open mind, try the street vendor food, check out the out of the way place a local suggests, you'll have a wonderful trip.

Here are a few suggestions...

Paris - if you want to go to the Eiffel Tower, go up just before sunset, that way you have the daytime and night time views. Buy the museum pass, you won't have to stand in line at the Louvre which can be time consuming and you can return several times which relieves the pressure of trying to see everything. The pass can be purchased at any museum where it's accepted (many locations) but the one with no line is in front of Notre Dame, the museum of archeology.

Travel on trains is good, sleeping compartments save money on hotels and are fairly comfortable. Take off from Frankfurt in the evening and sleep your way to Paris.

You did get some good answers already, I will add to them.
Rick Steves is good for travel advise, and for traveling on a moderate budget, but when you are actually traveling, take a Lonely Planet guide.
They list many more places, starting with the cheapest. With quality warnings where needed.
And they also list places to eat, go out, museums and sights with opening times, and travel info between towns and in towns. All with prices that were correct at the date of print. (Just add 10 to 25% for price rises for every year since.)

Train travel is very convenient. If you plan on traveling a lot, consider a pass:

Both systems have passes, flexi passes that can be used for a few days in a longer period and single tickets. And on both sites you can work out the cost of single tickets against a pass, as they both have a travel planner.
If you travel overnight by train ask for a couchette, 4 or 6 bunks to a compartment, shared, at about 25 Euro per person as far as I know, I think that traveling with 4 you might be able to get a whole compartment, if you are lucky.

When looking for a place to stay, with 4 you will need two double hotel rooms, (not many rooms will sleep four) or when you go to a hostel, you might be able to get a 4 bunk room for private use.
Bed and Breakfasts you will need to ask for 2 double rooms too.
If you travel in fall, you might not need to make reservations before getting over, just the first few nights will do.
If you arrive in a town early in the day there will be many rooms available, ask at the tourist information office, or use your guidebook, (lonely planet!)
Smaller towns are mostly cheaper than big ones, but in big towns the cheapest lodgings are often cheaper still.

In fall, think about traveling north to south, inland to coast.
Make a loose travel plan, include all places you really want to go, and add those places you would like to see.
Remember that Europe, while not big, will take a long time to cover completely, so you will have to make choices.
Talk it over with your spouse and your friends, make sure you want the same. Many tours are spoiled and many friendships broken because the people expected something different from a trip.
Also talk about how you would feel about splitting up for the day or even a few days. Sometimes it is needed to have a little privacy, sometimes you just want to do something the others do not want.

You need to think about what you want to see:
eg nature/ scenery, cities
The further west and north you go the more expensive things will be, so you may want to try some places a bit more east....I can highly recommend Prague and Czech Republic..its modest compared to places like London, Paris and Rome and the city is soooooo beautiful ( it was not even on my list of places to go when I went, but its right in my top 5 places!)...I also loved Croatia...again a place I would not have thought to visit...again its MUCH cheaper than other places, has stunning scenery and soo much history. Its relaxed and the people are friendly. I loved Zargreb ( inland and a different feel to coastal towns), Dubrovnik and Split...I would think its a cheap option to Greece ( although Greece is supposed to be cheapish anyway).
Slovenia is a cheap option for Austria/Germnay...lovely in Lake Bled/Bohinj and Ljublijana is nice for a day.

Of course places like Italy have so much to offer with quite different architecture in different places eg Rome ( varied from roman to renaissance)...Pomepeii....( I don;t recommend Naples, just do a day trip from Rome) Venice is soooo different and worth a look for a day, Verona is lovely, Bologna and Siena are more mediveal and have a different feel while Florence ( is busy) but has such pretty buildings and soooo much art to offer ( nearby is Pisa ( tower) and Lucca..lovely and a great escape from Florence).

France has some amazing places to go too, while its more pricey that other places, Paris is great and has heaps to see and do...worthwhile++.
I never went to Germany so can;'t offer you any help there.
Accommodation will be the killer, so look carefully for good deals and even compromise a little with cheaper places ( but try not to get them too far out of the city as you will spend money getting there and time wasted getting to and from it)
this will free you up to buy niceish food, travel to more places and go into more places.Train is effiecent and the best way to travel around....I will give you a website for planes if you wish to hop around...there are some very cheap deals on offer at times and it may be a good option....
