I own (mortgaged) a middle terraced 3 bed house in South East England built in the 50's. I have recently been informed that the wiring is not safe and have asked three different contractors to give me a quote for a full re-wire. Does anyone know if there are grants available for this as I already have huge debts and don't have the extra funds available.

dont think youl get a grant for rewiring .best bet is go see whoever you got the mortgage from and see if they will give you loan, paying back through a slight increase in your mortgage payments ( after all it is their property, your only renting it untill the mortgage is paid in full so it is in their interest as well as yours) I worked as an electrician and done hundreds of house rewires and it was costing around 2/3K and that was in the 1980-1990 up here in Scotland and wages are less up here than in England and as I retired in 1993 I honestly could not tell you what it would cost now as I dont even know what a spark gets now for his hourly rate. But I used to advise people to see mortgage lender about loan and 99% of them got the loan .but work had to be done by reputable firm with a safety certificate being supplied.Hope this helps you Sue. and good luck.

Hi Sue,
Who has informed you that the wiring is unsafe?
Properties of the 50`s are not upto the standard of the current NEIC regulations but this does not necessary mean that the wiring should be condemned. I would get another opinion first, The average price would be between £2000 and £2500
if rewiring is the case. There are certain grants providing you meet the requirements, It`s worth a try.
Good luck kid

Hi Sue; I take it you have aluminum wire. That needs to be done over in copper wire with a ground. You could have someone a friend or relitive that could help. You need to take apart your recepticals or plug outlets Tape the new wire on to it Then goe down to the electrical box and disconnect it from the curcut and box then pull the wire down to the box untill you got the new wire. Then connect it back again. You have to do this to all the curcuts in the box.PLEASE SHUT OFF POWER FIRST.You might want to work in the daylight.I know your looking for an grant. But this is the real world It,s hard to do that. You could call the power Co.see what they say.You know they do have an interest too. They should be somewhat of help on this matter.I wish i lived in England,But I live in New England. It,s a little far to travel or i would be happy to help.Good Luck.....John Whitfield in R.I. as a builder i have never heard of a grant available to a general member of the public ..however ..if your circumstances are dire then try the environmental health..they give grants in exceptional circumstances and you might qualify ..nothing ventured ....
