I could swear that there's a few buzzing about in the bathroom, but they aren't native, are they? Or were they always here?

You know, I could swear this is the first time I've seen them over here... I thought they were only in Asia... shows how much I don't know, eh?

We have always had mosquitoes. Up to the end of the 1800s you could also get Malaria in the UK. In Lincolnshire it was called the Lincolshire Ague or Fen Ague. Malaria was endemic up until the 20th century and was often known as Fen Ague or Fen Harr. If global warming continues you will find Malaria carrying mossies back in the UK!

Yes, Mosquitos exist in the UK.
They aren't buzzing in bedrooms
but rather over sleepy England.
These 2-engine fighter aircraft
of Second World War were too
good to throw all away into any
old dung heaps outside London.

Of course there are and the little buggers damn near eat me alive every time I go out.
They are not the same species as the ones that carry dangerous tropical diseases like Malaria though.
The worry now is that global warming might allow the tropical species to survive and breed over here and if that happens. with the increase in travel to exotic parts it's only a matter of time before the blighters hitch a lift on a plane or in someones luggage.

Midges and gnats are common in the UK but we get VERY FEW real mosquitos.
People need to realise there is a MASSIVE size difference between a gnat and a real mosquito! A real mosquito is at least as big as a penny piece.
I saw 2 in a marsh in Lincolnshire once, but that's all.
Apparently more are coming to Britain because of climate change.

Mosquitos are certainly native to the whole of Europe. Italy, for example, used to have a major problem with malaria right up until the 1950s.

Mozzies have ALWAYS been here in the UK, they are more or less worldwide, at least where it isn't too cold. They love moisture and usually hang around ponds.

Yes, but luckily they don't carry Malaria. I get bitten every year by the little blighters.

Oh yes...if fact there are several on my ceiling, waiting to party on my blood when I'm least expecting it...little bleeders.
Apparently we have more of them this year due to the wet summer!!!
