The people who say the surge is working are lying to themselves! It is not working. The only thing the surge achieved was putting more of our soldiers in harm's way. There is so much MONEY to be made from this war and that's what's really keeping this war going. MONEY! There are almost as many private contractors in Iraq as there are US soldiers. BILLIONS of US dollars went missing. THOUSANDS of US weapons have also gone missing. Defense contractors, Oil companies, private contractors to rebuild Iraq, etc., etc., are all there for the MONEY. It's too bad our own US soldiers won't see a fraction of the money all of the Halliburtons and Lockheed Martins will see. And yet, they will come back to the US, some to wives or girlfriends who have left them, some to post traumatic stress disorder and mental illnesses, some to physical ailments, some to homes that have been foreclosed on, some wounded, some in flag drapped coffins and not one will be any richer.

I think it's because they still have false hope that it will become a reality. The most brilliant minds predicted this war would be a failure. Those people that had a good grip on reality (like me) knew we were in trouble after the first month of occupation. Those that could read the writing on the wall knew the war was a disaster one and a half years into it.
What we are left with today are people who have forsaken reason in hopes of achieving a miracle. These are people who would or did call for the occupation to continue in Vietnam as Saigon was falling. In short they're desperate to believe because they think something even worse will happen if we leave. Where do we even start to reason with such unreasonable people ? Many years of faulty thinking have made them that way.

Because it is. It is making Iraq more secure.
It just isn't doing what was intended to do, which was buy the Iraqi's time to get a political solution.
What will happen is General Petraeus will report that Iraq can be managed, but without a political solution we should pull out and let them commit genocide.
The final analysis will say that the Sunnis refused to compromise because they felt they could get a better deal when the US pulled out like the congrssional democrats kept promising we would.

An improvement in counter-terrorist activities can easily be documented. That is what the surge is intended to accomplish, so it is true that the surge is working.
The political performance and governing performance of the elected Representatives in Iraq is a whole other issue.
Sad to say but almost two millennium of failed systems and governments in that area show the apparent futility of hoping they can govern themselves. They seem to remain unable to grasp the concept of cooperation and the idea that the majority may rule, but must NOT rule to create harm to the minority.

if anyone believes the surge is working, go over there and walk through downtown Baghdad with no body armour and no gun and tell me how safe you feel. There is no more military solution to this and needs to be solved ploitically, which is NOT being done either. It is time for us to get out and let them blow themselves up.

As long as American forces are present and in strength, I suppose it is working - until they move on.
So where is the political solution ?

Because if they were to say different they would be telling the truth and no body wants that. The truth is unpatriotic.
